About

Spoke My Rim’s objective is to help city cyclists transition from doing the occasional longish rides to doing ultracycling events. Our approach is by introducing folks to the many ultra rides in Southern California, hosting long group rides, as well as organizing double centuries in the Los Angeles area. I will also share my experience as I explore my limits of riding a fixed gear bicycle.

  1. Dear Stegosaurus!

I hope you don’t mind me getting in touch, I found the link to your excellent blog from the Furnace Creek 508 website.

I’m currently writing a book on the World’s toughest endurance challenges, which will be published in the UK and US (and I hope some further areas) in mid 2012. The aim of the book is to showcase around 50 of the toughest events, including an outline of the event, some great photos and a short athlete interview. Events included range from the Manhattan Island Marathon swim and Badwater to the Iditarod, Tevis Cup and Furnace Creek 508.

Adventure Corps has let us profile their races in the book and are supplying some photos to use, but I wanted to get some insight from a 508 finisher – hence the email.

If it would be ok with you, would you mind answering a few questions on your experience in the race this year? If this is ok, what would be most convenient for you – I could either call you or I’ve included the questions below if emailing would be easier?

    – How did you prepare mentally and physically for the Furnace Creek?
    – What were the biggest obstacles you faced in your preparations for it?
    – It’s a tough challenge – how did you keep yourself going while you were cycling?
    – Were there any issues that you faced during the race, how did you overcome them?
    – What was it like to complete and how do you feel on reflection?

I hope this is good with you, it would be fantastic to get your insight on your race and riding the fixie all that way!

Please let me know if I haven’t been clear or you have any questions,

    Kind Regards,
    Richard
